Schwinn Airdyne Bike - An Exercise Bike Classic!
The Schwinn
Airdyne has been
made and sold since the
1970's. If there is a classic exercise bike, the Schwinn Air-Dyne is
it. I bought one several years ago and have put about 5,000 miles on
this workhorse.
The Schwinn
Airdyne upright exercise bike introduced
the
fan resistance exercise.
The Schwinn Airdyne bike concept is very simple. You pedal the bike and
the pedaling turns a
large fan. The faster you pedal, the faster the fan turns and the
harder it is to turn. So the resistance increases as you pedal faster.
Also the handle bars are linked to the pedals so the handlebars move as you pedal. You can "pedal" just with your arms or just with your legs or with your arms and your legs together.
If you push the handlebars and the pedals, you really can get a total body workout. The handlebars can engage your entire upper body in a vigorous workout. Your lower body is worked on by the foot pedals. So it's a great machine for a muscle workout plus a heart and lungs challenge too.
And is this thing a tank. Heavy duty in every way, the Schwinn Airdyne exercise bike is nearly indestructible. That's why you can find a used one if you look for awhile. Mine has been just about trouble free. Of course you'll need batteries in the electronics and you might wear out a pedal or some minor piece, but this thing is built to last. Even the seat is super heavy weight and durable.
I ran a hilly half marathon several years ago and used
the Schwinn
Airdyne upright exercise bike as the
initial training program for that project. The
weather was bad for weeks when I needed to start training. I worked out
on the Schwinn for several weeks to develop a base fitness level. When
I started running outside, I could tell my condition was far better
than if I had started training from my normal fitness level.
Based on my experience, the Schwinn
Airdyne Upright Exercise Bike
is a great
exercise bike. New or used, you won't be disappointed.
